SCROLL DOWN TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SEEDS AND PLANTING!
We plan to create a window garden for the corner of the Learning Commons to be used as learning experiment and to promote low-energy food production.
THIS IS A WHOLE SCHOOL EXPERIMENT!
By having the garden in the Learning Commons, there will be opportunity for all students to observe our process and even participate in the care and watering of the plants.
We will share our results here so our efforts can teach others interested in the science of low energy food production and/or home gardening.
We are truly hoping to get the entire school involved. We already have a parent volunteer, Tina Fischer, who is assisting with green thumb expertise.
The Seeds!
Radishes were the first to germinate (photos from Friday, Feb 7). The seeds were moved to the Learning Commons.
By Feb 10, both the beans and radishes had sprouted significantly. Both the onions and spinach had started to germinate.
On Feb 11 we moved the beans and radishes to a larger planter.
On Feb 18 we transplanted the onion and spinach seeds to a planter and have set up a daily watering schedule. (DISCLOSURE: the plants were stored at Mr. Davidge's house over the long 5-day weekend. When moving back to school, the leaves on the bean plants curled a bit due possibly to exposure to the very cold weather when moving from house to car. We hope for a strong recovery.)
